Kenyans in Japan Association wishes to congratulate Kenya’s Deaflympics Team for their valiant and spirited campaign at the 25th Summer Deaflympics Tokyo 2025, held from November 15–26.

The 84-member team delivered an outstanding performance, finishing 11th out of 79 nations, 1st in Africa, and the only African team to place within the top 20. Kenya amassed an impressive 15 medals: 5 Gold, 6 Silver, and 4 Bronze.

A major highlight was the world-record-breaking performance by Ian Wambui Kahinga in the men’s 5,000 metres, leading teammates James Musembi and Nelson Kipkorir to a historic clean sweep of the podium.

Other Gold Medalists included:

  • Lucas Wandia – 3000m Steeplechase
  • Elkana Rono – 800m
  • James Musembi – 1500m
  • Ian Wambui Kahinga – 10,000m

Kenya was also proudly represented by veteran deaf athlete David Kiptum Kipkogei, aged 46, who in an inspiring achievement, bagged the Silver medal in the Men’s Marathon.

Kenyans in Japan were honored to share in the proud and celebratory moments as the Kenyan flag was hoisted high in Japan’s capital. We are deeply grateful to the athletes and officials who welcomed us to join in the celebrations and bask in the glory of this historic achievement.
